SCENES FROM FIRE ISLAND
Most New Yorkers are familiar with the charm of Fire Island. For those who just don't get out much or don't live locally, here is a taste:
The Island is accessible, for the most part, by pubic ferry or private boat. A train, bus or car can take you to one of the many ferry stops, which are each about 90 minutes outside the city. The ferry leaves often and takes about 35 minutes to reach whatever section of the Island you might want to visit. As can be expected, each area has its own personality: Fair Harbor, Saltaire, The Pines, Cherry Grove, etc.
This afternoon I was invited to Ocean Beach to visit a friend of a friend, who owns a lovely summer home there.
No Cars Allowed is what makes this Island uniquely relaxing. Only those whose Island home is their primary residences, are permitted to drive a car on the Island, off season. For everyone else, supplies are usually brought onto the Island, from Shore, via the ferry. Residence's wagons gets locked-up by the dock, in the parking lot pictured above. Pulling your wagon to your door is the only method of transport. No concierge service here!
Typical street scene.
This is the charming corner home is owned by a friend of a friend, who was a gracious hostess. The wild foliage is the signature look of the Island.
At the dock, waiting for the next ferry.
