Jean Paul Gaultier: Rock Star Couture
See + almost feel garments worn by Madonna, Beyonce, Cate Blanchet + others. This show leads you thru the extraordinary provocatively creative world of one of the most prolific designers who has been consistently an icon of his own making, for generations.
Yesterday was my b'day. My longtime Parsons art school friend was able to score 2 passes (complete with line-cutting), to this incredible show at the Brooklyn Museum. If you can get over there today, run - don't walk to experience this large collection of the most beautifully crafted garments. Word of caution - the ticket holders line is really long - bring a camera (allowed) with a fully charge battery. These images were taken with my half dying iPhone.
Beyonce word the middle garment above + the last was on-loan from Madonna's personal collection.
Aside from the garments, There was something else extra ordinary with this exhibit.
The mannequins had moving, talking faces.
An overhead projector pointed toward each model's head, projected a talking, moving face complete with eyes rolling + mouths that smiled. This took the sometimes edgy attire + made it human. In some of the exhibition spaces there were 30 mannequins lined up, each had it's own distinctly human personality.
There was of course a replica of the master himself, welcoming us to the show.
Complete with his French accent + devil-may-care smirk.
Extraordinary indeed.
*A technical glitch is not allowing me to upload those videos to the blog at this moment,
but check back at a later date - or better yet, get over to experience it in person.
Photograph of Cate Blanchet wearing a version of the garment below left which was on a rotating platform.
A beautifully collection reminiscent of the Alexander McQueen show at the Met, a few years back.
A definitely memorable experience I'm glad I was able to share.
